That’s the title of my satirical novel. Most of the action takes place within the Denver neighborhood Capitol Hill and at the Colorado State Capitol. After my book’s eventual publication, I intend this blog to serve as an adjunct to its darkly comedic text. But, no matter when you happen to discover this site, I’m glad to have you along for the ride. Howdy, partners, from A Western Capitol Hill...
When a controversial bill at the Colorado State Capitol pits a transsexual real estate broker against a Religious Right legislator, two lobbyists battle—in mercenary fashion—on opposing sides of the cultural war.
Welcome to Denver’s Capitol Hill. It’s where the Colorado legislature meets. It’s, also, an eccentrically diverse neighborhood populated by gays, goths, anarchists, Chicano activists, fascists, nouveau gentry, neighborhood-watch alarmists, the drunken homeless, and violent criminals. Last, but not least, it’s the stomping ground of a mythological beast – in addition to hosting other ghostly apparitions.
Deriving sustenance from the Mile High City’s sordid past and present is the Denver Dragon. The dragon has taken a paint-huffing decapitator under its predatory wing, leading to further mayhem and murder.
Will the young lobbyist, Garrett Wilcox, convince conservative legislators to vote against a bill to outlaw gay adoption? Will he overcome his depression and find a soul mate? Will he lose – or recover – his sanity following a bizarre, hallucinogenic episode?
A Western Capitol Hill (70,000 words) is a darkly comedic tale of lust and avarice set in the New West, complete with bad sex, bad drugs, and bad rock ‘n’ roll. It’s a rollicking farce, a politically-incorrect look at culture, as pertinent to today’s national zeitgeist as it is to the city that it’s set within. The recurring sounds of trains signal that Denver will never be the same, ever again. The book, however, holds out for its characters -- and the city, itself -- the prospect of renewal from within.
